The Changchun Wuhuan Gymnasium is about to open after it changes to the Pingyu Stadium
Changchun Wuhuan Gymnasium is set to reopen following the transformation of Tableau Stadium, as reported on April 17, 2015 at 1:06 PM. Currently, the once-empty space of the Changchun Wuhuan Gymnasium has been transformed into a large badminton complex, with table tennis tables positioned beside the main venue. It has been announced that the facility will be open to the public in May this year.
According to Yu Donghua, the director of the Changchun Wuhuan Gymnasium, the renovation project is divided into three key areas. The first involves the installation of badminton and table tennis courts, with 14 professional badminton courts and 8 table tennis tables already in place. The second part focuses on upgrading the shower and rest areas, as well as adding fitness equipment near the rest zone to support pre-workout warm-ups. The third area includes opening the basketball hall to the public. While the badminton and table tennis courts have been completed, the improvements to the shower and rest areas are still ongoing. The gym is expected to officially open to the public in May. Once fully renovated, the stadium will be able to accommodate nearly 100 people simultaneously for badminton, table tennis, and basketball. Admission will be offered through a combination of low fees and free access, as the gym is government-funded and charges will remain affordable. Yu also mentioned that the badminton and table tennis facilities are detachable, allowing the stadium to host large-scale cultural and sports events while also serving as a recreational space during off-hours, significantly increasing its overall utilization.
Liu Haiyu, director of the Municipal Sports Bureau, stated that the Wuhuan Stadium’s renovation is just one part of a broader plan to upgrade the entire Changchun Sports Center. Work on the center began as early as 2014. In the southwest corner, a new artificial turf soccer field has already been opened to the public. This year, the municipal government plans to increase investment further, with the Sports Bureau responsible for maintaining the main building's exterior. Additionally, the sports center will undergo road reconstruction to implement a closed management system for both pedestrians and vehicles, helping control traffic flow. Landscaping and lighting upgrades are also planned as part of the comprehensive improvement.
Moreover, the venues within the sports center will be upgraded to better suit their specific functions, making full use of existing resources to maximize public access and meet citizens' growing demand for sports and fitness opportunities. The preliminary renovation plan is expected to be finalized by the end of June this year.
