The Changchun Wuhuan Gymnasium is about to open after it changes to the Pingyu Stadium
Changchun Wuhuan Gymnasium is set to reopen after a major transformation from its previous identity as Tableau Stadium. The renovation, which began in 2014, has now reached an advanced stage, with the facility expected to open to the public in May this year.
Currently, the once-empty space of the gymnasium has been transformed into a large badminton complex, with table tennis tables placed alongside. According to Yu Donghua, the gymnasium's curator, the renovation is divided into three key areas. First, the installation of 14 professional badminton courts and 8 high-quality table tennis tables. Second, improvements to the shower and rest areas, along with the addition of fitness equipment for pre-exercise warm-ups. Third, the opening of the basketball hall to the public. While the badminton and table tennis facilities are already complete, the shower and rest areas are still under construction. Once finished, the venue will be able to accommodate nearly 100 people at once for badminton, table tennis, and basketball.
The gymnasium will offer a mix of low-cost and free access, as it is government-funded. Notably, the badminton and table tennis courts are designed to be detachable, allowing the stadium to host large events while also serving as a recreational space during off-hours. This flexible design significantly increases the facility’s overall utilization.
Liu Haiyu, director of the Municipal Sports Bureau, mentioned that the Wuhuan Gymnasium’s renovation is just one part of a broader plan to upgrade the entire Changchun Sports Center. A new artificial turf soccer field in the southwest corner has already opened to the public. This year, the city plans to increase investment further, focusing on maintaining the main building’s facade, reconstructing roads, implementing closed management for pedestrians and vehicles, and improving landscaping and lighting.
Additionally, all venues within the sports center will undergo upgrades tailored to their specific needs, ensuring efficient use of existing resources and better service for the public. The preliminary renovation plan is expected to be finalized by the end of June.
