Warning: solid wood furniture is not the same as all solid wood furniture
In recent months, the Shaanxi Provincial Administration for Industry and Commerce conducted random inspections on wood-based panel furniture in the province's retail market. These tests were carried out by the Shaanxi Provincial Forestry Industry Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Station. Following the results, the administration issued consumer warnings to help buyers make informed decisions.
Solid wood furniture, especially pieces made from mahogany or other luxury hardwoods, has become a popular collectible item in recent years. As a result, prices have soared, with premium woods often costing several times more than common ones. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous merchants take advantage of this trend by repainting or altering cheaper furniture to pass it off as high-end solid wood. This has led to numerous consumer complaints and legal issues.
When purchasing solid wood furniture, it’s essential to understand the different classifications. According to GB/T 3324-2008, solid wood furniture is divided into three categories: full solid wood, solid wood veneer, and composite solid wood. Some sellers may mislead customers by calling veneered furniture “solid wood.†Always ask for the product manual and verify that the materials are clearly listed. If a seller claims the furniture is entirely solid wood, ensure this is documented in the contract or supported by proof, as this will be crucial if any disputes arise later.
Different wood species can vary greatly in price. Before buying, take time to learn about common wood types and their respective costs. It’s best to purchase from well-known stores or reputable shopping centers that offer strong after-sales support. Always sign a formal contract that includes detailed information about the product, including the main and secondary materials used. When listing the wood type, use the official name from national standards, ideally the Latin name, to protect your rights in case of future disagreements.
Redwood, which includes 5 species, 8 categories, and 33 types of wood, comes in various grades and prices. When buying redwood furniture, always request the necessary documentation, such as the product manual, Redwood Furniture Quality Express Card, and product certification.
For those purchasing wood-based panel or composite furniture, officials from the Shaanxi Provincial Administration for Industry and Commerce advise paying close attention to hidden areas like the back, bottom, and drawer sides. These parts can reveal the actual materials used. Additionally, check the edges of movable panels and look for signs of proper edge sealing.
The surface of the furniture should be free of scratches, dents, bubbles, or peeling. The grain should appear natural and consistent, with minimal color variation unless it's part of the design. All parts should be symmetrical and evenly aligned. The decorative elements should be smooth, well-bonded, and free from rough edges or gaps.
Furniture made with panels typically uses metal or plastic connectors. These components play a key role in the overall quality. Inspect them for thickness, smoothness, and proper plating. Avoid any that show rust, burrs, or poor craftsmanship.
Finally, when opening doors or drawers, be cautious of any strong or irritating odors. A sharp smell may indicate excessive formaldehyde or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which could be harmful. If you experience eye irritation or coughing, it’s best to avoid the product.
