3D printing industry explores whether it is full or skinny

3D printing also has an official name called Additive Manufacturing (AM), which is an emerging manufacturing technology based on digital models, which piles up materials layer by layer to create physical objects, reflecting information network technology and advanced materials. The close integration of technology and digital manufacturing technology is an important part of advanced manufacturing. Because of its deep integration with information network technology, it has brought a transformative impact on traditional manufacturing, and has become the focus of countries in the world to cultivate future industries. What is the scale of the additive manufacturing industry? Where has the scope of application been extended? The "China Additive Manufacturing Industry Development Report (2017)" just released last quarter brought a detailed interpretation.

What is the size of the industry? Who leads the market?

According to Wohlers Associates' statistics on 61 industrial system manufacturers, 19 specialty material manufacturers, 100 service providers and a group of consumer-level additive manufacturing equipment manufacturers in the world, in 2016, the global additive manufacturing industry output value reached 60.63 100 million US dollars, an increase of 17.4% year-on-year. The number of industrial-grade additive manufacturing equipment manufacturing enterprises continues to increase. In 2016, there were 97 industrial-grade additive manufacturing equipment manufacturers worldwide, which was nearly doubled from 49 in 2014. The report shows that in 2015, the share of the global additive manufacturing equipment market in Europe and the United States accounted for 67.9%. Among them, the share of North American countries is 39.7%, and the share of European countries is 28.2%, both showing a downward trend. The share of Asian countries is 27.5%, showing a slight upward trend. From the perspective of different countries, the United States has the highest share of equipment ownership, up to 37.8%, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points compared to 2014. The share of equipment ownership in Germany ranks second, up to 9.6%, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point compared to 2014. China (excluding Taiwan) ranks third in the ranks of latecomers, and its share of ownership increased from 9.2% in 2014 to 9.5% in 2015, an increase of 0.3 percentage points.

According to the statistics of the Chinese Additive Manufacturing Industry Alliance on the operating data of 23 enterprises above designated size, the total output value of domestic additive manufacturing enterprises above designated size in 2016 was 2.03 billion yuan, an increase of 87.5% from 1.08 billion yuan in 2015. In the first half of 2017, the total output value was 1.16 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 50.5%, and the industrial scale achieved rapid growth. From the perspective of industrial composition, the proportion of output value of additive manufacturing equipment, materials and services is 50.1%, 26.9% and 23.0%, respectively, and the output value of additive manufacturing equipment accounts for half.

How wide is the scope of application? Which industries have great potential?

In recent years, additive manufacturing technology has been widely used in many fields such as aerospace, automotive, medical, cultural creativity, innovative education, etc. More and more companies are using it as a technology transformation direction to break through R & D bottlenecks or solve design problems and help New manufacturing modes such as intelligent manufacturing and green manufacturing. From the perspective of the global additive manufacturing application in 2015, industrial machinery (19.9%), aerospace (16.6%), automotive (13.8%), consumer products / electronics (13.1%), medical / dental (12.2%), etc. The top five applications in the field. Compared with 2014, the application in the field of industrial machinery increased by 2.4 percentage points, the application in the field of academic institutions increased by 2.3 percentage points, and the application in the aerospace field increased by 1.8 percentage points. However, applications in consumer products / electronics, automotive, medical / dental, government / military, etc. have decreased by 3.5, 2.3, 0.9, and 0.7 percentage points, respectively.

What other problems need to be solved for 3D printing in China?

1. The scale of industry is low. Although China's additive manufacturing industry has made great progress, on the whole it is in a "small, scattered, weak" state.

2. The development of special materials lags behind. China's development in the field of new materials for additive manufacturing is still lagging behind, facing the current situation of material selection limitations, fewer varieties, fewer suppliers, and high-performance materials that rely heavily on imports.

3. Key equipment and core components are imported. In terms of environmental temperature control and process stability, China ’s industrial-grade additive manufacturing equipment still has a large gap with developed countries. The problem of critical equipment and core components relying heavily on imports is still more prominent.

4. The industry standard system is not perfect. Although China has proposed 7 national standards in the field of additive manufacturing, it has not yet established a complete additive manufacturing standard system covering design, materials, process equipment, product performance, certification testing, etc.

5. The collaborative promotion mechanism needs to be improved. At present, there is a serious disconnect between domestic production, research, and research. Many innovative technologies are still stuck in colleges and universities, and it is difficult to achieve industrialization. The closely integrated R & D and industrialization promotion mechanism for production, education, and research has not yet been effectively formed.

6. Application promotion needs to be strengthened. At present, China's understanding of additive manufacturing technology is still insufficient, and its innovative application capabilities are not strong enough. In addition, the high cost and maintenance costs of industrial-grade additive manufacturing equipment, small and medium-sized enterprises are prohibitive, hindering the transformation and upgrading of existing traditional production methods Long-term market cultivation. In the field of metal additive manufacturing, affected by the "functional priority" design concept and other factors, how to further accelerate the application and promotion needs further exploration.
