How to clean and maintain the natural gas stove
Gas stoves, often referred to as gas cookers, are kitchen appliances that use fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, or other gaseous sources to provide direct flame heating. These appliances are commonly known as stove tops and are widely used in homes around the world. Similar to traditional stoves like charcoal stoves, kerosene stoves, or coal stoves, gas stoves come in various types based on the fuel they use and their design.
In terms of fuel type, gas stoves can be categorized into artificial gas stoves, natural gas stoves, and LPG stoves. Based on the number of burners, they are available as single-burner, double-burner, or multi-burner models. Depending on the structure, they can be desktop stoves, built-in stoves, floor-standing stoves, or combined units. The materials used for the surface vary as well—some feature all-stainless steel panels, while others have glass or ceramic surfaces, which offer a more modern and elegant look.
When shopping for a gas stove, it's essential to first determine the type of gas available in your home. This could be natural gas, LPG, or artificial gas. Make sure to inform the sales representative about your specific gas type before purchasing. Additionally, pay attention to the quality of the stove’s surface—thicker steel plates are more durable and less likely to warp over time. Stoves with cyclone or infrared technology tend to be more efficient, saving you gas in the long run. It’s also important to choose a model with a flame failure protection system, which automatically cuts off the gas supply if the flame goes out due to wind or water. Pulse ignition systems are more reliable and convenient than traditional lighters.
Proper maintenance is key to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of your gas stove. Keep the stove at least 50–100 cm away from the gas cylinder, and ensure that the gas hose is no longer than 150 cm. Avoid letting the hose touch the stove or pass underneath it. It's recommended to replace the gas hose every 18 months to prevent leaks caused by aging or damage. Before using the stove, check the flame failure protection device: after lighting the stove and letting it burn for a minute, reduce the flame and blow it out. If the protection system works correctly, the flame should shut off within 5 seconds (for ion-type) or 20 seconds (for thermoelectric-type). Always turn off the main gas valve after each use.
Regular cleaning is also important. Clean the surface and surrounding area frequently to maintain its appearance. Ensure there is enough space between the stove and any water source. Clean the burner caps and holes weekly to prevent blockages that could lead to flashback or yellow flames. If your stove uses pulse ignition, replace the batteries every four to six months, depending on usage frequency.
For tempered glass stoves, avoid using abrasive cleaners or tools that could scratch the surface. Wipe up spills immediately, and clean the burners regularly to remove carbon buildup and prevent issues like yellow flames or flashback. It’s also advisable to have a professional from the gas company check the gas tightness of the stove and connections periodically to ensure safety.
If you notice any unusual flame behavior—such as flames not staying on the burner, burning inside the burner, or turning yellow—it may indicate a problem with the stove. In such cases, contact a professional for inspection and repair.
