New decoration, furniture tastes big

There is a taste after renovation. Does it mean that indoor air pollution is excessive? This is a concern of many people. In the past two years, with the issue of PM2.5 and smog, more and more attention has been paid, and decoration pollution may be a source of pollution more serious than air pollution, and it is also entangled in the hearts of thousands of ordinary people.

The state has relevant regulations on indoor air quality, and it can be found through air quality testing whether there are excessive pollutants in the living room. On the one hand, air detection can make the owner know clearly whether the home environment is safe. On the other hand, it can also become the basis for consumer rights protection.

Stayed after the renovation and felt unwell

Whether the indoor air is exceeded after renovation, the body is usually the first sensitive "detector". Indoor air pollutants mainly include formaldehyde, benzene (benzene, toluene, xylene), TVOC (total volatile organic matter), radioactive cesium and ammonia. In addition to radioactive cesium, several other contaminants are either irritating or aromatic. When the concentration of pollutants is high, it will stimulate the sense of smell and the surface of the skin, causing physical discomfort.

Like many families, Miss Lin in the Liwan District has also been "invited" after the renovation, which is most intuitively expressed in the body. Miss Lin lived in the one-bedroom and one-bedroom of the old town. As the house was old, Miss Lin renovated the whole house last year. After doing a simple hard work, Miss Lin is still quite satisfied. There is no big quality problem in the project, and there is no feeling of how big it is. However, the problem after the furniture entered the scene appeared: the interior can obviously feel a greater taste.

“The new furniture tastes a bit normal.” Miss Lin didn’t think much about staying. Who knows for the next period of time, Miss Lin always feels physical discomfort, irritating taste, dizziness and headache, affecting sleep. Therefore, Miss Lin also went to the hospital for inspection. Although she did not find any problems, she was worried about the safety of her home. So, Miss Lin decided to do indoor air testing to see if there were any pollutants in the house.

After one month of renovation, the benzene series and TVOC still exceeded the standard.

Speaking of decoration pollution, many people think that formaldehyde is excessive. In fact, formaldehyde is only one type of pollutant. I know a little about air pollution. What Miss Lin wants to know is whether there is excessive formaldehyde in the house. Under the advice of the testing company, Ms. Lin did a formaldehyde detection test on the hall and kitchen, and conducted more detailed tests on the room, including formaldehyde, benzene and TVOC.

The test results showed that although the formaldehyde did not exceed the standard (for example, the formaldehyde detection result in the hall was 0.048 mg/m3, the formaldehyde in the room was 0.036/mg/m3, and the standard of 0.1 mg/m3 was not exceeded), and the benzene series and TVOC exceeded the standard. Among them, the test results of toluene and xylene were 0.228 mg/m3 and 0.256 mg/m3, respectively, and the national standards of both were 0.20 mg/m3. The TVOC test result was 0.982 mg/m3, which exceeded the national standard of 0.6 mg/m3.

According to Lin Guangchao, an air testing engineer at Guangdong Huanke, although the data exceeding the standard is not too outrageous, the owner has already stayed for one month. The characteristics of the decoration pollutants are that they are released most at the beginning and gradually decrease over time, especially formaldehyde, and the release amount is the largest within 3 months before the decoration. It can be inferred from the data that the benzene series and TVOC are definitely exceeded when the decoration is completed immediately, but the formaldehyde is not exceeded after the decoration.

Lin Guangchao said that Miss Lin bought old-fashioned solid wood furniture with a dark brown surface and a heavy paint finish. In particular, a finished wardrobe with a bed in the bedroom can still smell a strong smell, which may be the main cause of pollution. In the testing experience, this type of furniture is more common in households with excessive air standards. However, it is necessary to determine specifically whether it is caused by furniture pollution, and it is necessary to make destructive testing of furniture to determine. It is also because it is difficult to clarify the source of pollution. Although Ms. Lin has always had a lot of theory with furniture dealers, she has always been difficult to defend her rights. In the end, she can only get rid of it. Only ventilation can make indoor pollutants disperse as soon as possible.

Industry observation

Indoor pollution has improved in the past two years

“Before the standard exceeded five or six times, even more than ten times, the data of the two years exceeded the standard is not so outrageous.” Lin Guangchao told the New Express reporter that although indoor air pollution exists, most of them are excessively exceeded, exceeding 1-2 times. More serious situation.

Analysis of the reasons, he said, on the one hand, consumers are paying more and more attention to air quality, preferring to use more safe and environmentally friendly materials; on the other hand, it also stimulates technological improvement, quality improvement and serious pollution of household products. Furniture and building materials have gradually been eliminated from the market.

However, the improvement in the overall situation of indoor air pollution does not mean that consumers can be optimistic. “Most of them feel that there is a taste in the room. If there are air detection cases, there are different levels of pollutants exceeding the standard.” Lin Guangchao said that the national standard for indoor air pollutants is the lowest safety standard, even if a small amount exceeds the standard, it is harmful to the body. Moreover, most households are inspected 1-3 months after the renovation (the national standard requires no more than 7 days after the renovation). At this time, the pollutants have been released for some time, and consumers should have stricter requirements for air pollution.

Home air pollution protection is still a big problem

Although air quality testing is of great significance to home security, from the perspective of rights protection, there are still some difficulties. Through air testing, you can understand whether the indoor air exceeds the standard, which is beneficial to the health of family members and provides a basis for pollution control. On the other hand, air quality testing is also a measure of whether the quality of the decoration exceeds the standard. According to the relevant national standards, air quality is a part of the decoration acceptance, and the decoration company needs to be responsible for the indoor air quality.

But the problem is that the current decoration is mostly semi-package repair (the owner buys the main material, the decoration company is responsible for the decoration), and the furniture is mostly purchased by the owner himself. It is difficult to define the source of pollution after the furniture enters the site. It is difficult to determine whether the source of pollution comes from the decoration substrate, building materials or furniture, unless destructive inspection (such as breaking the floor and furniture parts for testing). Many owners are unwilling to accept such a troublesome and influential check-up method. As a result of the problem of excessive pollutants, it is difficult for the owner to report rights through the indoor air test report.

Expert advice

In addition to formaldehyde, we must also pay attention to benzene, TVOC

The state has specific regulations on indoor air quality. Formaldehyde, benzene, TVOC, radioactive cesium and ammonia are the most common indoor pollutants. Lin Guangchao said that ammonia is more common in antifreeze, and that household decoration in the north is relatively common, while southern families are less likely to detect ammonia. Radioactive cesium is mainly found in stone, and there is also a part in the tile. In general, large-scale stone-refining households are recommended to add radioactive cesium testing.

Formaldehyde, benzene series, TVOC are common in home decoration, and are also harmful pollutants. Formaldehyde decoration mainly exists in sheet metal and furniture lacquer. Benzene is often found in paints, furniture lacquers, leather and other materials. TVOC exists in a variety of building materials and furniture, such as the large use of eucalyptus in the home, may also lead to TVOC exceeding the standard.

Formaldehyde and TVOC are irritating and can irritate the skin, throat, eyes, nerves, etc., causing sore throat, tearing, dizziness and headache. The harm of benzene is relatively large, and it can enter the blood, causing serious health hazards such as leukemia. Therefore, “it is necessary to pay attention to different pollutants according to the specific decoration of the family.”
