(Two sessions) Wang Yongfeng suggested accelerating the establishment of a youth outdoor education system
At the Third Session of the Twelfth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Wang Yongfeng, a member of the committee and captain of the Chinese mountaineering team, proposed accelerating the development of an outdoor education system for young people. On March 8, he shared his vision, emphasizing the need to move beyond traditional classroom and family-based education models to encourage children to explore the outdoors.
Wang pointed out that outdoor activities can help build mental resilience and teach essential survival skills, first aid, and environmental awareness. He highlighted that exposure to nature has significant benefits for both physical and mental well-being. In many countries, outdoor education is well-established, with numerous summer and winter camps offering diverse experiences. However, in China, such educational content remains limited.
In his proposal, Wang described outdoor education as a hands-on learning approach that takes place in natural settings. It emphasizes experiential learning through direct sensory engagement with nature and society. Activities may include hiking, rock climbing, camping, pottery making, and wildlife observation. These experiences differ from traditional classroom education in teaching methods, goals, and outcomes.
Wang noted that China currently lacks both the concept and infrastructure for outdoor education. To address this, he suggested accelerating the development of a structured youth outdoor education system, increasing financial support, improving teacher training, and building more outdoor camps. He also emphasized the importance of integrating practical knowledge into real-world experiences, promoting exploratory learning, and enhancing the overall health and development of young people.
According to Wang, children naturally enjoy being outdoors. The Chinese Mountaineering Association regularly organizes camps and activities that are very popular among kids. From what he has seen, children are eager to engage in outdoor learning, showing a genuine interest in exploring and discovering the world beyond their usual environments.
