(Two sessions) Wang Yongfeng suggested accelerating the establishment of a youth outdoor education system

At the Third Session of the Twelfth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Wang Yongfeng, a member of the committee and captain of the Chinese mountaineering team, proposed accelerating the development of an outdoor education system for young people. On March 8, 2015, he emphasized the need to shift from traditional classroom-based and family-centered education models, encouraging children to step outside and engage with nature. Outdoor education, according to Wang, not only helps build mental resilience but also teaches essential survival skills, first aid, and environmental awareness. He pointed out that exposure to nature significantly benefits children’s physical and mental well-being. In many countries, structured outdoor programs such as summer and winter camps are widely implemented and have proven effective. However, in China, there is still a lack of systematic outdoor education for youth. In his proposal, Wang described outdoor education as a hands-on learning approach that takes place in natural environments. It emphasizes experiential learning, discovery, and inquiry, allowing students to directly engage with nature and society through activities like hiking, rock climbing, camping, pottery-making, and wildlife observation. Unlike traditional school education, outdoor education offers different methods, goals, and outcomes, focusing more on real-world application and personal growth. Wang highlighted the current gaps in China’s outdoor education system, including a lack of awareness, infrastructure, and trained educators. To address this, he suggested speeding up the establishment of a comprehensive outdoor education framework, increasing financial support, improving teacher training, developing standardized curricula, and building more youth outdoor camps. He believes that by integrating outdoor learning into the educational system, students can better apply theoretical knowledge in practice, develop problem-solving skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the value of exploration. Many children already show a strong interest in outdoor activities, as seen in the annual outdoor programs organized by the Chinese Mountaineering Association. Wang feels that if given the right opportunities, young people will embrace and benefit greatly from a more balanced and holistic form of education.
