How to make your own exclusive sports shoes with 3D printer
In the world of sports, everyone knows how crucial it is to have a perfect pair of shoes. Ill-fitting shoes can cause painful blisters and make your feet uncomfortable, especially during long workouts or runs. That’s why many people dream of having a custom-made pair that fits their unique foot shape perfectly. The rapid advancement of **3D printing technology** might just make this dream come true. With digital design tools, we can now adjust the size and shape of shoes to fit individual needs and then **print** them in **3D** using the right materials. However, 3D-printed shoes are not as simple as they seem.
Recently, a user named iwillspy13 from Instructables, who is also a design student, successfully created a pair of sneakers using 3D printing. His experience could be a great guide for anyone looking to try this process themselves.
"The whole process was time-consuming and required a lot of effort," iwillspy13 shared. "But it was totally worth it. Creating something from scratch and seeing it used in real life gives you an incredible sense of achievement."
The first step in the process is choosing the type of shoe you want to print. Then, to create a plaster mold that closely matches the shoe’s shape, you need to start by making a model. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A pair of shoes with a similar design
- Gypsum and all necessary materials for casting
- A woven bag
- A smartphone with a camera
- **3D modeling software** (such as 3DS Max, recommended)
- A **3D printer**
It's important to take around 40 photos of the shoe from different angles—top, bottom, and side views. Once you’ve captured all the images, upload them into 3DS Max and begin the modeling process. Iwillspy13 split the shoe design into two parts, which made the task more manageable. While the design work was challenging, he eventually succeeded after putting in a lot of effort.
Many basic designs can be found in Autodesk’s tutorials, and working on one side of the shoe often helps solve other issues. You can also download files inspired by popular brands like Adidas from platforms such as Thingiverse and import them into the software.
"Essentially, you just connect the points and lines into a grid and carefully adjust them to get the desired shape," iwillspy13 explained. "Adding the sole at the beginning is straightforward."
He added a surface smoother and adjusted the surrounding points to refine the sneaker’s shape. At times, he had to edit Bezier curves to ensure the surface looked smooth. Later, he fine-tuned the model, added an editable polygon, and manipulated it as needed to achieve a clean mesh.
Once the model is ready and confirmed to be printable, the main part of the project is done. Iwillspy13 used MakerBot software and a Replicator 2 printer, adding support structures during the printing process. It’s essential to double-check the settings before starting the print to avoid any issues.
