Introducing Kumulo – Secto Design’s Majestic New Pendant Lamp

What would it be like if a fluffy cumulus cloud were transformed into a wooden lamp by Secto Design? Or imagine snow-draped fir trees in Lapland being sculpted into radiant statues by the heavy blankets of snow—how enchanting would that be? These vivid images sparked the imagination of architect Seppo Koho as he embarked on designing Kumulo, Secto Design’s latest highly anticipated pendant lamp, named after the iconic cumulus cloud. “A few years back, during a husky sled adventure in Lapland, I found myself captivated by the layered beauty of snow-covered trees,” recalls Seppo. “This concept stuck with me and eventually shaped the design of Kumulo. However, the soft, ethereal quality of clouds also played a significant role in my vision. I crafted this piece last summer, inspired by the ever-changing skies filled with clouds.”

Architect Seppo Koho has designed all 30 Secto Design lamps.

Every Secto Design lamp originates from the creative mind of Seppo Koho, showcasing a distinct visual language rooted in minimalist Scandinavian design. Yet, none of his previous designs have been as complex or challenging to produce as Kumulo. Seppo personally creates prototypes for his lamps in his own workshop, but transitioning a design into full-scale production is always labor-intensive, often necessitating the creation of new tools—a requirement fulfilled for Kumulo. “With such a clean, simple design, precision is paramount. Even the smallest detail is noticeable,” explains Seppo. “Each step of the manufacturing process must be executed meticulously and on schedule.”

The Kumulo pendant lamp is crafted in Finland from premium Finnish PEFC-certified birch. PEFC certification ensures ecologically and socially sustainable forestry practices.

The distinctive design of Kumulo features form-pressed birch slats. Each Secto Design lamp is handcrafted in their Heinola, Finland factory. Given its undulating structure, it took considerable time to perfect the production process for the Kumulo pendant. Secto Design only introduces new lamp models after thorough deliberation. Seppo emphasizes the importance of timeless design and enduring quality. “Longevity is not just practical—it’s environmentally responsible too.” The designer himself envisions Kumulo fitting seamlessly in lobbies, restaurants, and personal spaces alike. All Secto Design lamps function beautifully alone or in groups, offering versatility to suit any setting.

Kumulo mirrors the dynamism of cumulus clouds: when you gaze at them, they seem almost alive, shifting subtly over time.
