Pancake Hearts

This past week was a double celebration with Valentine’s Day and Pancake Day falling on the same week. Naturally, I thought it would be fun to combine the two and make heart-shaped pancakes. What could possibly go wrong, right? Well, as it turned out, quite a lot. By the time I got home from dropping off the kids at school on Shrove Tuesday, the girls were already clamoring for pancakes. I should have known better than to attempt anything fancy that early in the day. All I wanted was ten minutes of peace and a cup of tea, but I figured I’d whip up a quick batch before dinner. I’ve made pancakes countless times before, so I wasn’t too worried—until disaster struck. I went with an easy recipe, adding a splash of food coloring to half the batter to give it a pink hue. I also pulled out my pancake molds, thinking they’d help me achieve those perfect heart shapes. But things quickly spiraled out of control. The batter ended up being lumpy, I accidentally poured way too much oil into the pan, and by the time I realized the heat was too high, it was already too late. Some of the pancakes burned, others were too thick and soggy, and not a single one looked as good as I hoped. The kids didn’t help matters either. As soon as I got started, they began causing chaos. One of them insisted on playing with paint, another kept demanding glasses of milk (which somehow multiplied), and the third was climbing all over me, wanting to be picked up. By the time I managed to finish cooking a few pancakes, there was barely any batter left, and most of the toppings were gone. In the end, I salvaged a couple of pancakes that looked somewhat presentable, though they tasted okay at best. The girls weren’t impressed, especially when I handed them one of the less appealing ones. Molly walked into the kitchen shortly after and asked, not so politely, for help with her swimming goggles. When I mentioned I was just sitting down to eat a pancake, she responded with, “I wouldn’t bother—they’re not great.” And she wasn’t wrong. On the bright side, I did manage to save one pancake for myself, and while it wasn’t perfect, it still hit the spot. It reminded me of how much I love pancakes, even when they don’t come out as planned. For some inspiration on making better pancakes, I suggest checking out my Snowman Pancakes recipe. Actually Mummy also has a fantastic post with tons of ideas and fillings if you’re looking for something new to try. By the way, if you're interested in a chance to win a short break at Center Parcs with your family, they’re running a contest where you need to create your own unique pancakes and share photos of them. Just tweet using the hashtag #CPFamilyBreaks and tag @tots100 and @CenterParcsUK. This month's challenge ends at 4 PM on February 22nd. You can find all the details here. Even though my heart-shaped pancakes didn’t turn out as expected, I still had fun experimenting. Sometimes, the best memories come from the mess-ups, right?
