Pancake Hearts
This week marked both Valentine’s Day and Pancake Day, so naturally, I decided to combine the two by making heart-shaped pancakes. I mean, how hard could it be, right? Well, as it turned out, it was quite the disaster.
I got home from dropping the kids off at school on Shrove Tuesday to find the girls waiting anxiously for their pancakes. Now, I’ll admit that I was hoping for a moment of peace—a quick cup of tea and a breather—but they were insistent. So, I figured I’d whip up a batch quickly and serve them later with dinner. I’ve made pancakes countless times before, and they usually turn out fine.
To keep things simple, I went for an easy batter recipe and added a few drops of pink food coloring to half of it. I also used some pancake molds I had lying around. I managed to get a couple of decent ones done, as you can see in the picture below. But almost immediately after I got started, chaos erupted. The kids began fighting over who got to play with the paints, demanding glass after glass of milk, and ate all the sprinkles before the pancakes were even ready. It’s usually easier for me to work when the kids are entertained in the living room, but this time, they were everywhere—literally underfoot.
My biggest mistake was probably setting the pan temperature too high. That’s not all though—I messed up practically every step along the way. The batter ended up lumpy, I poured way too much oil into the pan, and the batter itself was unevenly distributed. Some pancakes didn’t get flipped soon enough, and let’s face it, having three kids hovering around isn’t exactly ideal for precision cooking. While the pancakes weren’t awful, they were slightly burnt in spots, a bit too thick, and had a mushy texture. Still, with some toppings, you don’t really notice those issues too much.
By the time I finally finished, I managed to save one pancake for myself. As I sat down to eat it, Molly walked in asking (not very politely) for help with her swimming goggles. When I told her I was taking five minutes to enjoy my pancake, she responded bluntly, “I wouldn’t bother—they weren’t actually very nice!†And unfortunately, she was spot on.

This post is part of the Center Parcs Family Blogger Club. They’re currently running a contest where you can win a short break for you and your family. All you need to do is create your own unique pancakes, snap a picture, and tweet it using the hashtag #CPFamilyBreaks to @tots100 and @CenterParcsUK. The deadline for this month’s challenge is 4 p.m. on February 22. Be sure to read the full terms and conditions here.
In the end, despite my epic pancake fail, the kids seemed to have fun, and I learned that sometimes, perfection is overrated.
