Promote Independent Innovation and Technology to Support the Development of Physical Fitness

In recent years, promoting independent innovation and technological advancement has become a key strategy to support the development of sports and fitness. On March 13, 2015, the Ministry of Science and Technology emphasized its commitment to building a well-rounded society and a strong sports nation. Collaborating with the State Sports General Administration, it focused on enhancing scientific and technological support in three key areas: competitive sports, mass sports, and the sports industry. The goal was to foster innovation, improve technological capabilities, and accelerate the application of sports science and technology achievements. During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the Ministry launched key technology research initiatives for China’s competitive sports advantage projects and Winter Olympics programs under the National Science and Technology Support Program. These efforts aimed to prepare for major international events, such as the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, by providing advanced technical support for emerging sports disciplines. The Ministry has long prioritized scientific and technological support for the “National Fitness Program,” continuously working to enhance public health and establish an efficient national fitness service system. In 2012, through the Twelfth Five-Year National Science and Technology Support Program, it initiated projects focused on key technologies for promoting physical fitness and developing a scientific fitness expert guidance system. These projects involved 14 research institutes and universities, laying the groundwork for nationwide fitness programs in 2014, including the launch of a demonstration area for physical health management systems. Additionally, the Ministry supported the establishment of strategic alliances led by Taishan Sports Industry Group and the China Federation of Sporting Goods Industry. These alliances were included in the national industrial technology innovation pilot program, aiming to drive innovation in public sports equipment, materials, and product functions. In 2014, the State Council issued guidelines to accelerate the development of the sports industry and promote sports consumption. In response, the Ministry of Science and Technology worked closely with the General Administration of Sport to assess key technology needs and develop implementation plans. Looking ahead, in 2015, the Ministry planned to deepen cooperation with the General Administration of Sports and other relevant departments. It intended to conduct a strategic study to identify major scientific and technological needs across competitive sports, national fitness, and the sports industry during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. By integrating sports services, supplies, and supporting technologies into high-tech fields, the Ministry aimed to ensure continued support for sports research and innovation. It also sought to streamline the management of science and technology plans, encouraging qualified companies and institutions to lead future research projects. Ultimately, the goal was to maximize the benefits of sports science and technology for public health and well-being.
