A “ban” is difficult to change the downturn

Since 2013, almost all ASEAN countries have implemented a ban on the export of rosewood raw materials. In June of the same year, the newly revised Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora entered into force, and Southeast Asian countries strengthened control over the management of mahogany. In May of the same year, Vietnam took the lead in raising taxes on rosewood raw materials exports by 200%. In October, Vietnam and Laos began to ban some timber exports.

In April 2014, six rosewood countries of origin such as Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, India and Madagascar have banned the export of endangered timber. In January this year, Cambodia cut off all ports and passages for exporting redwoods to Vietnam; at the end of February, Myanmar began to strictly control local redwood harvesting; in April, Thailand, Myanmar and other countries introduced new policies, that is, to stop all timber harvesting in 2016-2017. Activities; from May to June, Laos issued an embargo on wooden products export and a ban on logging; in June, the Cambodian government announced a total ban on timber exports.

In 2013, after the introduction of the redwood ban by many ASEAN countries, the mahogany market once set off a speculation. The price of mahogany furniture also soared. Some of the raw materials were more and more expensive, almost one price a day. According to the 2015-2016 China Redwood Industry Development Report, China imported 904,300 cubic meters of mahogany in 2015, a year-on-year decrease of 56.01%.

However, the good times did not last long. After 2014, China's mahogany furniture market quickly cooled down, and the exhaustion was full, revealing the true face of market speculation and high prices for many years.

B Development prospects are dawning

Although there are many problems in the mahogany market, the development prospects should not be all pessimistic. Experts believe that under the new normal of the country's macro economy, if the mahogany enterprises can correctly handle the problems, they cannot rule out the development trend.

At the end of last year, when Pingxiang visited the mahogany furniture market, Li Liyang, a professor of trade at the Guangxi Institute of Economic Cadres, believed that the mahogany market would be out of the predicament based on the domestic redwood stock and the future development trend of redwood.

According to Li Yang, from the perspective of the trade environment, a country’s foreign trade will not be interrupted, including the redwood trade. In recent years, the source of raw materials in the domestic mahogany market has been expanded, and it has expanded from Southeast Asia to Africa and South America. At present, in the mainstream tree species of trade in the rosewood market, the stocks vary. The stocks are relatively rich in locusts, such as locusts, etc., and the stocks are medium-sized, such as Sian rosewood, etc., and the stocks are scarce, such as scented rosewood. From the perspective of structural adjustment, red stocks that are scarce in stocks will limit exports, while stocks that are relatively abundant or medium in stock may be relaxed.

At the same time, in the past few years, the redwoods that the merchants expected the shortage of raw materials and hoarded urgently will be sold as soon as possible. Even if ASEAN countries restrict the export of mahogany raw materials, mahogany products are not limited. In January of this year, China imported 141.33 million pieces of rosewood products, a year-on-year increase of 23%.

In May of this year, in the Dongxing Redwood Market, the reporter found that the sales of some branded mahogany furniture have improved, and some dealers have already recovered their confidence in operating the mahogany. There is reason to believe that after a period of adjustment, the mahogany market may usher in a new turn. Of course, the most important thing is that the mahogany industry must consciously adjust, transform and upgrade the existing problems.

C Where is the way out of the predicament?

The raw material market speculation boosts the price, indicating that supply does not necessarily create demand. The redwood industry should recognize that due to the development of the industrial chain and informatization, the traditional cost structure (solidification of talents) will change, and the price composition will also change. In any industry, the excess returns are only an exception. Generally, the average profit should be the basis for the long-term development of the industry.

The current fact is that the decline in total demand for rosewood exceeds the decline in total supply, leaving dealers with strong pressure to survive. Some places have found the root cause of the problem and taken countermeasures. For example, Pingxiang City recently emphasized the five major development concepts as a guide to seek new ways for the sustainable development of the redwood industry.

How does the rosewood market get out of the woods? Huang Yaodong, a researcher at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies at the Guangxi Academy of Social Sciences, believes that the key is to transform and upgrade and return to rationality. It is necessary to develop new sales models through product development, marketing innovation, platform construction, etc., or to reduce the “value” to meet the needs of mass consumption. From the perspective of the whole industry, the various drawbacks highlighted after the market ebbs are also urgently needed to be rectified, such as false realism, shoddy, rough process, and high price.

In the face of the depressed mahogany furniture market, some dealers attribute the reason that the cultural connotation of mahogany furniture is not rich enough, so the key to getting out of the market downturn is to improve the cultural taste of mahogany furniture. However, in many cases, cultural factors are unlikely to determine market factors. At present, this “far water” of culture is difficult to solve the “near thirst” of the maoki market.

Based on the causes of the drawbacks of the mahogany market, the way to transform and upgrade mahogany furniture should have the following aspects:

- Standardize production technology processes. Although there are more than 2,000 enterprises in Guangxi, there is a lack of standardized production technology processes, which leads to the failure of product quality. In 2014, Guangxi Science and Technology Department has drafted technical regulations for the production of mahogany furniture, with the aim of standardizing the mahogany industry, promoting transformation and upgrading, and achieving fair competition and healthy development.

-- Improve product innovation and design capabilities. At present, nearly 90% of the design of mahogany products is an antique product, with serious plagiarism and lack of innovative consciousness. Large enterprises have no intention of increasing design investment, and small enterprises cannot afford design costs. Therefore, improving product innovation and design capabilities is fundamental to transformation and upgrading.

- Strive to open up consumer groups. Consumption power determines the prospects for industrial development. With the advancement of urbanization and the continuous improvement of people's living standards, many people are still interested in mahogany products. It is very important to reverse the downturn in the mahogany market and boost consumer confidence.

- Strengthen after-sales service. The current quality of after-sales service in the mahogany industry is low, which inhibits some of the consumer demand. Therefore, we must increase the construction of after-sales service of mahogany and improve the quality of after-sales service

- "Going out" to cooperate with ASEAN raw materials. As a resource-based industry, mahogany processing enterprises must firmly grasp the key link of deep processing on the one hand, and actively cooperate with ASEAN raw materials countries on the other hand. After nearly 20 years of development, the processing technology level of China's mahogany furniture has been improved to a certain extent, and it has the ability to promote equipment, technology, standards and services to go abroad. Actively promoting the establishment of the Redwood Industrial Park with ASEAN countries is undoubtedly an important way out for the redwood industry in China.
